Cinematic master Steven Speilberg brings us his latest period-specific film. It’s the end of the 1950s and the Cold War is in full effect. The United States and Russia are in the midst of a nuclear standoff and Germany has just been split into two countries. James Donovan (Tom Hanks) is tasked with defending a Russian spy in court and when he loses, he thinks it’s over. But the U.S. government comes calling for his help in brokering a trade for an American spy captured in Russia. When James learns there an American student also being held in East Germany, he attempts to bring both Americans home through negotiations all while not getting killed by the communist enemies.
