HISTORY
The Canadian Movie Crew are Sean Taylor, “Mean” Mark, and Tex. We are three friends who love movies. Sean and Mark began the Film Studies podcast in 2012 with Hunger Games. We would talk about the movies we saw after watching them and decided that we should record it and release it as a podcast. The podcasts were first released on RingsideAcademy.com – a professional wrestling site hosting other podcasts and articles – as a fun side project.
Soon, we added Tex to the show (and occasionally we do add special guests) and it began to gain its own traction. In 2014, we decided to remove Film Studies from Ringside Academy and make its own site. To compliment the Film Studies podcast, we created a weekly podcast called Or Is It? And finally, on February 18th, 2015, CanadianMovieCrew.com was officially launched to the public.
We don’t make any money for this site and this is purely a passion-project. We know that opinions are like assholes. Everyone’s got one and entitled to their own. We love some movies, we hate some movies, but in end, it’s all about enjoying time with friends.
WHAT IS FILM STUDIES?
The Film Studies podcast is a review show looking at movies released in theatres. We see the movie in theatres, then immediately record our first impressions and reactions. We give a quick spoiler-free review at the beginning then go through the film with spoilers. At the end, we each give our unique out-of-10 rating with our final thoughts. Sometimes our first opinion isn’t our lasting one but hey, that’s life. The Film Studies podcasts are released on a irregular basis based on when we able to see the movies and get together to record.
The Film Studies Podcast has spawned other special podcasts such as our annual Year in Review show (handing out our own awards to the movies of that year), the annual Retro-spook-tive (a look back at horror movie series released in October), and even the Film Studies Cartoon (short videos highlighting funny moments from podcasts past).
WHAT IS OR IS IT?
To compliment the Film Studies Podcast, we created a show called Or Is It? The premise behind the show is that sometimes you watch a movie and think “maybe the story they told wasn’t the REAL story in this movie”. So we review a movie (usually a not-so-great one but not always) in a comedic fashion ending with each of us giving our own thought as to what the REAL story in the movie was. This podcast is purely for entertainment and not to be taken too seriously. If you like the movie, great. But deep down, all movies are can be poked at for the sake of fun.
The only unwritten rule for Or Is It? is that we won’t review a movie that was released in or after 2012. This could be broken for special episodes but really is something we try to stick to.
Staples of the Or Is It? podcast include Tex’s synopsis, Mark’s “unofficial” sponsor reads, Sean’s sneak peek at next week’s movie, and the ever changing opening theme which relates somehow to the movie in question. But really, just listen to the show and you’ll get it.
